Six months after the devastating Eaton Fire tore Altadena, the community went all night in honor of the lives of 18 people lost in the disaster.
A speech was shared, and portraits of those who died in the flames were displayed Monday as the community recalls the victims killed in the fire in January. The Fire Prayer vigil took place on the six-month anniversary of the fire.
“I remember these individuals have stories. These individuals were part of this community, and some were building this community,” Pastor Anthony McFarland said. “So we give life and voice to the people whom the community gathers on this day, to who they are, to who they were and who they were in this community.”
The names of 18 individuals who died in the fire were read aloud. The deceased loved ones shared the stories of those who passed.
“She was a godly lover and a bus driver. She was a quiet person, she kept herself and just lived,” Zaire Calvin said of her sister, 59-year-old Evelyn McClendon.
The vigil was held as a way to help the community grieve as they continued to deal with their losses.
“We remember those whose lives were taken. We now lift up our families and loved ones who are grieving their absence,” said Pastor Mary Anne Harrison. “Be with us all in these times of grief and sadness.”
