With hot temperatures hit Southern California this week, cities and counties are offering resources to keep residents cool.

Southern California will experience the peak of the fever spell on Wednesday and Thursday. This is especially felt inland areas with temperatures that can exceed 100 degrees.

The cooling center is open throughout the region, with many counties offering energy efficiency programs and rebates to those struggling to pay utility bills amidst high temperatures.

Los Angeles County

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power offers up to $275 rebates for air conditioners for seniors, earned families, and those living in underserved communities.

“It’s a great opportunity to receive a free air conditioning unit that will help you stay cool and healthy during these hot summer months,” says Jackie Magarin, supervisor of the Cool LA Rebate program.

Customers can purchase up to two Energy Star certified air conditioning units per account here.

To qualify, you must have an active electrical account, including the EZ-Save Program, the Elderly/Disabled Lifeline Rate Program, the Life Support Equipment Discount Program, and the Physician Certification Allowance Discount, and be a participant in the discount program at the time of purchase.

“A lot of customers currently taking part in these discount programs can take advantage of this rebate,” Magalin said.

Azusa also offers rebates for home weatherproofing and energy star appliances, including ceiling fans and air conditioners.

Pasadena’s Water and Power Department currently offers rebates for cooling devices such as thermostats, ceiling fans and room air conditioning units.

Hundreds of cooling centers are open for relief in the city of Los Angeles, Mayor Karen Bass announced Tuesday that it will include a library, parks and pools.

Inland Empire

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory on Wednesday to the Inland Empire, including Corona, Riverside, Ontario, San Bernardino, Moreno Valley, Fontana and Rancho Cucamonga.

To avoid fever illness, the NWS reminds community members to stay hydrated, stay in air-conditioned rooms, avoid the sun, and remind them of relatives and neighbors to check in.

Riverside also offers customer rebates when purchasing and installing energy-efficient air conditioning systems through a residential heating and cooling rebate program.

The Inland Empire has several cooling centres. Riverside offers over 60 centers, allowing residents of San Bernardino County to find nearby locations with maps on its website.

Orange County

Orange County encourages community members to find heat relief at various cooling centers in their online directory.

Anaheim Utilities serve and serve smart thermostats, air conditioning adjustments, room air conditioning replacements, other cooling products and revenue-qualified customers.

Southern California resources

Socalren offers a list of other energy assistance programs and utility companies’ rebate programs across the region on its website.

California’s Community Services Development Agency also offers programs that help low-income households pay for cooling. The Low Income Housing Energy Assistance Program, a federal funding program focused on helping low-income households pay for heating or cooling, helps residents pay for energy bills or provide weather-resistant services within the home.
