President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he was tapping Transportation Director Sean Duffy to serve as NASA’s interim administrator.
“I am pleased to announce that we are directing our great Transport Secretary, Sean Duffy, to NASA interim administrator,” Trump posted to The Society of Truth.
“He will be an incredible leader in space agencies, even for a short period of time, more important than ever.”
The president praised Duffy’s performance at the Department of Transport, calling his tenure “incredible” and shared his work on modernizing air traffic control and reviving infrastructure. “We’re rebuilding roads and bridges and rebuilding them what’s efficient and beautiful,” Trump wrote.

Duffy, a former Wisconsin lawmaker and longtime Trump ally, enthusiastically embraced the role. “I am honored to embrace this mission. Time to take over the space. Let’s launch it,” he wrote to X.
Duffy will replace Janet Petro, who has been NASA administrator since January. Trump has retracted Jared Isaacman’s nomination for his role in May.

Isaac Man, a billionaire private astronaut and longtime Elon Musk aide, was appointed Trump in December 2024, but faced surveillance over Musk’s ties with Spaces, which some officials viewed as a conflict of interest.
Trump said the decision to pull out Isaac Man’s name came after growing concerns about “a thorough review of previous associations” and “corporate entanglement.”

NASA is increasingly considered in the Trump administration’s defense, innovation and economic agenda. Trump has long emphasized the strategic importance of space and launched the Space Force during his first term.
