Crews rescued 31 people trapped in LA’s Wilmington area Wednesday night after a tunnel collapsed.
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to an industrial tunnel in the 1700 block of South Figuero Ath Street before 8pm
The tunnel was filled with workers at the time. They were 300-400 feet below the surface, about 6 miles away from the only access point in the tunnel.

More than 100 LAFD responders arrived at the scene, including members of the urban search and rescue team, who were specially trained and equipped to handle rescues in limited space tunnels.
Sky5 footage captured the rescue operation as workers were caught in the surface from a tunnel 18 feet in diameter. The worker stepped into a metal chamber lifted by a crane on its surface.
Workers also reportedly had to climb a mountain of loose soil, 12 to 15 feet, to escape.
At about 9:20pm, all 31 workers were safely extracted and explained. No injuries were reported as paramedics checked each person on the scene.
Details are limited. The situation surrounding the collapse of the tunnel remains unknown.
