Sketched with an Air Suchic bag, the first Birkin handbag (a prototype of a fashion essential accessory) sold for a record 7 million euros (approximately $8.2 million) at an auction in Paris on Thursday. With Sotheby’s fee included, the total price for successful bidders from Japan was 8.6 million euros ($10.1 million), the auction house said.

Now, the original Birkin bag named after the actor, singer and fashion icon created by Hermes – the late Jane Birkin is in a new league of its own.
The bid started at 1 million euros ($1.17 million), and quickly became the stratosphere, with telephone bidders fighting to the end.
Paris Fashion House Hermes exclusively commissioned the bags of the London-born star in 1984. Initial JB was branded under the lock on the front flap, and the unique bag was delivered that was completed the following year. The subsequent commercialized version of Birkin’s Bag became one of the most exclusive luxury items in the world, luxuriously priced and had a waiting list for years.
Fashion accessories born from a random conversation
This bag was born from a chance encounter with Jean Louis Dumas, the head of Hermes at the time, on a flight surrounded by London in the 1980s. Birkin said in a subsequent interview that they spoke after spilling some of hers on the cabin floor.
Birkin asks why Hermes didn’t make a bigger handbag and sketches what she wants with the vomiting bag on the plane. He then had an example made for her and flattered her, and she agreed when Hermes asked if he could commercialize the bag in her name.
“There is no doubt that the original Birkin bags are truly unique. They are a singular history of fashion history that has grown into a pop culture phenomenon that shows luxury in the most sophisticated way possible. It is incredibly incredibly incredible that Jane Birkin’s most famous bag in history has become the most famous bag in Jane Birkin’s Halmee’s head.”
The bag became very famous and Birkin once remained silent before dying in 2023 at the age of 76, so her obituary would say “like a bag.”
“Well, that could be even worse,” she added.
Seven design features highlight the original
Sotheby’s said the seven design elements of the handmade all-black leather prototype set the Birkins apart from what happened afterwards.
It is the only Birkin with a shoulder strap that is not excluded. Appropriately the busy life and practicality of a singer, actor, social activist and mother, he was known for his romantic relationship with French singer Sage Gainesbourg.
Her bag had nail clippers because Bilkin was “not for long painted nails,” Sotheby’s said.
Hermes’ handmade bags are developed from existing Haut a Courroies models and also come in brass hardware, bottom studs and other features that differ from commercial Birkins.
Birkin’s casual and refreshing style from the 1960s to the early 1970s – paired with long bangs, jeans and white tops, knit mini dresses and basket bags – symbolizes the height of French chic for many women around the world.
I changed my hands twice for the prototype
When Birkin chatted with Hermes’ Dumas on a flight from Paris to London about what her ideal handbag would be, she felt the handbag was too small in the 1980s, so she was in the habit of carrying things in an evil basket. She was traveling with her young daughter Charlotte and complained that she couldn’t find the right bag for her mother’s needs, Hermes said.
Hermes later gave it to four other Birkin bags. She maintained the prototype for almost ten years in 1994 before auction for AIDS charity. It was auctioned again in 2000 and then became a private hand, Sotheby’s said.
“As more than just a bag, Birkin has evolved from practical accessories to become a timeless cultural icon,” the auction house said.
“Its existence spans the world of music, film, television and art,” he added. “It’s a red carpet staple, a mainstay of fashion magazines and a coveted piece of wardrobes of celebrities, artists and stylists.”
