The former Democratic mayoral appointee in Houston, Texas, has been criticised by the fundraising platform after the campaign was established to support “legal support,” following comments on social media about the race of 27 girls from Camp Mystic, who died in the Hill Country floods last week.
In the video, Sade Perkins said the camp was “a Christian camp for girls exclusively for white people.”
She failed to mention the races of more than 200 others as a result of multiple Texas county floods.
“It’s all white, just white, conservative Christian camp,” Perkins said in the video. “I’m not saying we don’t want to find a girl, what about the missing girl… But especially in today’s political situation, if this is a group of Hispanic girls… this isn’t getting the kind of coverage they’re getting.

The fundraiser “Support for Sade Perkins” has been featured on a crowdfunding platform, featuring photos and featured photos of young girls who died in the flood. This, created by Marian Hills, will likely benefit Perkins, a former member of the Houston Food Anxiety Commission.
“Sade Perkins is a public target for telling the truth,” the organizers wrote on the site. “After the devastating floods at Camp Mystic, Sado was as heartbroken as many of us, but she also had the courage to say something others wouldn’t.
Hill claims Perkins was creeping up, harassed and filled with messages of hate, and Houston Mayor John Whitmire said Perkins was fired “to make it appear that they had acted in response to the rage of the people.”
However, Hill said Perkins resigned in January “on her own terms.”

Despite Perkins inserting the race into the conversation, organizers are currently igniting backlash that she is facing “racialized violence.”
“Sad simply spoke about racial disparities in emergency response. Many people thought quietly, but were too afraid to say that. And the hatred she’s getting. It’s not just disagreements, it’s invisible racialized violence,” the fundraiser states.
Hill argued that if a white public figure had made the same comment, it would have “provoked a controversy, not a takedown.” She added that Perkins is a black woman and he is told, “You shouldn’t speak at all.”

Organizers said the funding raised would give Perkins “protection, legal support and recovery from the reputation she has perpetually committed and emotional harm.”
As of Thursday afternoon, the campaign had slightly increased its $400 with a $20,000 target.
Many of the donations are small and will be sent under a username that acts as comments.
Donations via “Strangeness to Houston” have earned 23 likes, while donations via other usernames, including racial slander, obscene language, or death threats, have hundreds of likes.

Although Perkins has not yet addressed the fundraiser, her boyfriend, Pastor Colin Bossan, issued a statement on his website that he would “deny” her comments.
“My partner, Sade Perkins, commented on social media about the horrific flood that devastated Camp Mystic, and I want to make it clear that I am denying her comments,” Bossan wrote. “She wasn’t speaking on my behalf or on my congregation’s behalf, but I am aware that her comments have harmed many people experiencing severe loss and anxiety.”
