The Stockton man was charged with attempted murder on Friday, when a probation officer allegedly burned – authorities left a considerable amount of burns, authorities said.
At 2:10pm on Thursday, the suspect entered the San Joaquin County Adult Probation Office in Stockton, carrying a lighter and a gas can, authorities said.
The department’s security guards activated an emergency warning upon the arrival of the man, but it is unclear why they urged the guards to act exactly.
Officials said that when the warning was raised, a probation officer responded, and he took him to the office. Once there they tried to detain the suspect. He attempted to detain the suspect.
Amidst the conflict, the suspect was able to ignite fuel and set one of the probation officers on fire, the department wrote in a Facebook post.
The probation department did not respond to Times’ requests for comment on how many officers were involved in the encounter.
Authorities extinguished the flames, handcuffed the suspect and identified him as 39-year-old Adam Lopez. He contacted the Stockton Police Department and took Lopez into custody.
According to the department, the probation officer suffered considerable burns and was taken to hospital for treatment.
The officers were then taken to UC Davis Medical Center for further treatment for his injuries, which were not considered life-threatening.
Lopez was also injured and was taken to hospital for treatment, authorities said. It is not believed that his injuries are also life-threatening.
Lopez was booked to the San Joaquin County Jail and charged with attempted murder and arson blocked by officers.
He is scheduled to be arrested Monday afternoon.
