Westlake students and her mother, both of whom arrived in the United States as asylum seekers, were deported to Guatemala after being detained on immigrant appointments.
The family of 17-year-old Nuri Santoy Ramos and her mother are distraught after the deportation on July 4th. They arrived in the United States as asylum seekers, when Ramos was six years old and his teenagers advanced in school life.
“I saw her grow up, so learning a new language and experiencing the obstacles she had, which was very unfair because I quickly took this from her,” said Nolly’s cousin Jennifer Ramos.
In a call with NBC4, the teenager, an honorary student and track star at Miguel Contreras High School, said she was devastated about her deportation.
“I’m really sad because I was hoping to graduate with friends and be playing track and field with them,” she shed tears. “I wasn’t expecting this.”
Nory shared that she and her mother were scared when they were taken into custody, as they had no idea where they were going. Eventually they were taken to Texas and then flew to Guatemala.
“I said, ‘Can you make a call? None of our families know that we’ve been deported,” and they said, ‘No, your family already knew you’ve been deported.’
While Nory and her mother appreciate their new reality, their loved ones say they are working on the steps they bring them back.
