The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating how the attack rifle went missing from the trunk of a squad car in South Los Angeles.
Deputies first noticed that the Colt M4 assault rifle was missing from the team’s trunk on Saturday night, between 10:30 and 11pm, according to a statement issued by the Sheriff’s Office.
The weapon was held in a “black, hard storage case” inside the trunk of the vehicle, with five magazines each carrying 30 rounds of ammunition.
The Sheriff’s Department asked the public to help locate the assault rifle and locate the routes that the lawmaker traveled on Saturday night, hoping to locate the weapon.
The lawmakers traveled about four miles in total, heading north on Normandy Avenue near the Southla Station’s Southern Station, west on Imperial Highway, then Hawthorn Boulevard, then west on 104th Avenue to Inglewood Avenue.
“When they realized the rifle had disappeared, South Los Angeles station staff immediately began a search for the station’s parking lot and followed the lawmaker’s travel route,” the Sheriff’s Department said in a statement. “Survey footage from the area is currently under review and local law enforcement agencies have been notified of the incident.”
The department also said it has begun an investigation to determine whether the process and procedures have been followed. The union representing LA County Sheriff’s deputies did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
