President Donald Trump on Sunday reflected the one anniversary of his assassination attempts against him, saying that he alone believes that he will save him and “return our beloved republic to greatness and save our nation from those seeking its ruin.”
At the time, Trump survived an attempted assassination at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, 2024. Trump was injured in the ear after a bullet grazes him, but one person was killed and the other person was injured.
A Secret Service sniper fatally shot 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks and 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks ascended to the top of a nearby building.
“A year ago today, at 6:11pm – eight minutes after I stood on the stage on the grounds of Butler Farm and dealt with the thousands of Americans who gathered at a campaign rally, and the fire flares up, and the assassin bullets came within a quarter inch of shutting down my life and silenced our movements to restore American greatness.

“But my life was spared by the hands of Providence and the grace of Almighty God,” he continued. “To mark one year since the tragic events of July 13th, 2024, we reaffirm that the American spirit will always win over the power of evil and destruction.”
The president praised those who rushed to help the victims at the rally, including the first responders he said he had “departed as heroes” and ordinary rally attendees.
“People with scars from that July evening protected the Republic in one of our country’s darkest times. They were attacked by injured people in chaos and uncertainty to provide comfort and lifesaving care,” Trump said.
He added that doctors and first responders were rushing to help the injured, and that the rally led fellow citizens to safety, “The Patriots raised their fists into the air, venting support and public pride.”
“These men and women arrived at the rally as ordinary Americans, but left as heroes,” Trump said. “They represent the best of our country and we are forever blessed with their kindness and compassion.”

Trump also highlighted the name of Corey Comperatore, a rally attendee who was killed to protect his family during the event.
“The world will never forget the tragic loss of firefighters, veterans, devoted husband and father Corey Comperatore,” Trump said. “When the gunshot erupted, Corey didn’t hesitate to protect his wife and two daughters. He lost his hero. We are forever grateful for his inspiring love, courage and loyalty.”
The shooting at Butler raised questions about how the suspect climbed into a nearby building and fired eight shots with Trump, leading to Secret Service scrutiny and resignation of the superintendent in the aftermath of the incident.
After another incident in September, more questions were raised about the agency. There, shooters camped in the colony outside one of Trump’s golf courses before being shot by a secret service agent.
Under the new leadership appointed by Trump, the agency has been working to address the failures highlighted last year. However, questions about security lapse still remain, and the gunman’s motives remain unknown.

“It remains my firm belief that only God saved that day for the purpose of justice. To restore our beloved Republic to greatness and save our nation from those seeking its ruin,” Trump said in his statement. “A year after my life’s attempts at Butler, our country is in the midst of a new golden age. History remembers becoming an assassin due to his coronavirus and failure, but the magnificent legacy of the hero of July 13, 2024 will be engraved forever in the heart of our country.”
Trump also spoke to reporters on Sunday, saying he doesn’t want to think much about his attempts to assassinate Butler.
“I don’t want to think about that much,” Trump said. “I have work to do, so I don’t want to think about it much. It’s a bit of a risky job to be president, but I really don’t want to think about it. Don’t think about it.”
