The CSU professor who was detained during an immigrant raid at the Camarillo Cannabis Farm is expected to appear in his first court on Monday.
The professor at Cal State Channel Islands was identified as Jonathan Caravello.
Calavero was arrested by federal agents on Thursday during a protest in response to a massive migrant attack on the Camarillo Farm.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said more than 300 people were arrested Thursday in two immigration enforcement projects on farms in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.
DHS secretary Kristi Noem announced on Saturday that federal agents had arrested 319 people during an operation at Glasshouse Farm near Camarillo and Carpinteria.
The DHS said law enforcement activities are part of an investigation into immigration and potential child labour violations.
NBC4 has obtained criminal charges against Caravero, including surveillance photos identified by the Department of Homeland Security as Caravero.
The complaint accuses Caravelo of throwing a tear gas canister at Border Patrol agents and then leaving the area to return to dress and being arrested.
While the professor waited for the judge to appear before the judge, members of the California Faculty Association organized a vigil on Sunday night to support Caravelo.
They tell NBC4 that he is a US citizen who has worked in the CSU Channel Islands for over five years.
“We are seeking the release of our fellow student professor, a California civil servant, CSU Channel Islands student, and a beloved professor,” said Alejandra Marchevsky, a professor at CSU Los Angeles.
The university says it understands that Caravello is peacefully protesting while working to gather more details at this time.
