Authorities say the eerie teddy bear, made from human skin over the weekend and discovered outside a gas station in Victorville over the weekend, turned out to be a practical joke.
Hector Corona Villa Nueva was arrested Monday on suspicion of bringing the evidence to the emergency authorities and mistakenly presenting evidence as real, according to a news release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
“An incident like this could take valuable emergency resources, put the public at risk, and perhaps delay the response time to legitimate service calls,” according to the release. “We would like to thank those who reported useful information during the investigation of this case.”
At 12:07pm on Sunday, deputies from the Victorville Police Station answered a call at the AMPM gas station on Bear Valley Road, officials said. The agent found a teddy bear made of what looked like human skin. The San Bernardino County Coroner gathered the bears and determined that they were not made up of human bodies.
South Carolina artist Robert Kelly of Darkseed Creation confirmed in a Facebook post that she was the creator of Bears and that she shipped one of them to an Etsy customer in Victorville last week.
Posting by Facebook’s Video Kelly, the Bears were sewn together like a Frankenstein monster with “human skin” and dodged what looked like blood.
“No, I had no knowledge of the buyer’s intentions and was not involved in the mischief on the other side of the country from me,” she wrote.
The bear is on sale at the seller’s Etsy shop for $165 and is now sold out.
