Officials at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s South LA Station have announced that the patrol vehicle has been recovered along with 150 rounds of .223 caliber ammunition missing from the trunk.
The July 12 incident occurred as deputies responded to a call for services from 10pm to 11pm along the four-mile route.
” [Colt M4] The rifle is stored in the trunk of a patrol vehicle and is believed to have fallen out during transport,” the official said, adding that the rifle and ammunition are stored in the case of a black hardshell.
When she learned of the shortage of firearms, sheriff’s officials began a search in the train station’s parking lot, boosting the move of deputies from west of Imperial Highway, north of Hawthorne Boulevard, and west of 104th Avenue to Inglewood Avenue.

Authorities also said they were reviewing surveillance footage of the area they travelled to, and during that time they requested footage from public volunteers along the same route as the area.

In an update issued shortly after 5pm on Monday, the department said attack rifles, ammunition and hard cases were returned to the station by Lennox residents at 2:30pm today.
“At about 11:30pm on July 12, 2025, residents found a black hard storage case on 104th Street and Condon Avenue, believing that there was an instrument inside,” the department said in an updated news release. “He later opened the case and discovered it contained rifles and ammunition and urged it to be converted to South Los Angeles Station.”
