The 2,000 National Guard troops assigned to missions in Los Angeles more than a month ago, after protests against the immigration enforcement raid were released from federal duties in Southern California.
The federal security guards’ activities in early June were a flash point between the Trump administration and local, county and state officials, and said there was no need for the military in Los Angeles. President Trump has ordered the revitalization of around 4,000 California National Guard troops and 800 active-duty Marines, contrary to the wishes of Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.
US Department of Defense Chief Sean Parnell said 2,000 security guards will be released from federal missions.
“Our military forces stepped up to answer calls have calmed the lawlessness in Los Angeles,” Sean Parnell, the U.S. Department of Defense’s chief spokesman, said Tuesday. “As such, the Secretary ordered the release of 2,000 California National Guard (79th IBCT) from the federal protection mission.”
National Guard members, commonly activated by the governor at the request of local governments, have been assigned to protect federal property, such as downtown Los Angeles Federal Detention Center.
Members of the first federal National Guard arrived in Los Angeles on June 8 after several protests against immigration enforcement work became violent. Local law enforcement officials responded to cases of violence during the mostly peaceful protests of the week that continued in parts of downtown Los Angeles, when curfews were in effect.
The federalization of security guards also led to court battles between California and the Trump administration. A panel of three judges said in June that when President Trump made the National Guard federal government to the federal government without the governor’s consent, the White House likely sue its powers. The decision of the appeals court panel has halted the decision of a lower court judge who found President Trump illegally revitalised the military.
Security guards remained in LA as California lawsuits against the administration continued to unfold in court.
Marines are primarily assigned to protect federal buildings.
California has entered a hot, dry summer months when the risk of fast-moving wildfires is increasing. Gov. Newsom warned that security guards are understaffed due to the Los Angeles protests. Security guards will assist in firefighting and prevention through rattlesnakes from the Joint Task Force, a California National Guard wildfire unit.
Trump claims there was “invasion” by immigrants entering the country without legal permission. At the height of the deployment, some members of Congress questioned the predictions at their annual budget hearing with their secretaries that it was a forecast to extend the nationwide deployment, so Hegseth did not provide a direct response.
At the time, Senator General Dan Kane told lawmakers, “We don’t see any invasions of foreign countries sponsored, but we’ll keep in mind the fact that there are some border issues.”
Recent immigration enforcement projects in Los Angeles and elsewhere in Southern California are part of President Trump’s campaign promises to implement a massive deportation plan. The administration highlights arrests that include undocumented individuals convicted of violent crimes. Those caught up in the nationwide attacks include asylum seekers, those who have continued visas and immigrants waiting for a day in immigration courts.
More than 185,000 people were arrested nationwide for immigration enforcement work from October to early June 2025, according to US immigration and customs enforcement data obtained by NBC News. Approximately 0.4% of these arrests involved people convicted of murder and 1.8% who have been convicted or faced of sexual assault.
Approximately 42% of the US have no criminal history.
California has 10.6 million immigrants, more than any other state, according to the California Institute of Public Policy. More than 2.6 million undocumented immigrants live in California, according to a 2024 Department of Homeland Security report that relied on 2022 data. This number is probably high.
Most of the state’s immigrant population is in large coastal counties such as Los Angeles County, where around 3.5 million people, or around 35% of the county’s population, are immigrants. According to the report, Los Angeles County has around 809,000 undocumented immigrants, with a population of 9.6 million.
