Cudahy’s vice-mayor Cynthia Gonzalez caught the public’s attention over the immigrant raids and comments on the Los Angeles gang, and addressed the controversy on Tuesday weeks later.
At a city council meeting held Tuesday evening, Gonzalez was accused of calling on gang members to protect their neighborhoods from federal agents on now-deprecated social media videos, confirming her freedom of speech and clearing the air.
In part, Gonzalez said during the meeting:
“I just want to spend a little time dealing with the short, satirical tiktok video I recently created. I have elicited national headlines and public criticism. To be clear, I created this video on my personal time and personal pages. The message was not about ordinary people. I would like to apologise to our community. My video would like to apologise to the city staff and to my community for paying attention from the pain that our community has given us unnecessary attention to our city.”
Last month, the deputy mayor drew criticism after saying he wanted to know “where is all Choros in Los Angeles” during a federal attack.
“Where is the leadership? You guys are all territory and this is 18th Avenue, so this is Florencia,” Gonzalez said in a controversial video. “You guys tag everything, insist on the hood and now your hood is invaded by the biggest gang out there, so there’s no peep from you.”
The video urged the Department of Homeland Security to call the comments “despicable.” The LA Conservation Federation and Union of the Los Angeles Police Department have called for her to resign.
