Progressive Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is being blamed by his GOP enemy Maud Maron. She has contributed to a massive surge in shoplifting and organized crime in America’s biggest cities due to policies that tell criminals to “get out of prison escape cards.”
This comes after retail industry leaders testified Tuesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee on the dramatic rise in systematic retail theft in recent years.
According to the latest data from the National Retail Federation, retailers reported an average annual number of shoplifting cases in 2023 increased by 93% compared to 2019, and a 90% increase in dollar losses from shoplifting over the same period. The survey states that shoplifters surveyed an average increase in shoplifting cases from 2022 to 2023.
Shoplifting is supposed to be facing “everyday” by retailers across the country.

The report said that in 2023, those surveyed experienced an average of 177 shoplifting incidents per day. However, this number has increased by more than 1,000 depending on the retail sector. The report lists New York as the second city most affected by organized retail crime in 2024.
Maron, a former Democratic public defense attorney, is currently running for Manhattan District Attorney as a Republican, and told Fox News Digital that the “surge in shoplifting” was “not surprising.”
“Shoplifters, Lawbreakers, I got the message: You can do this and you won’t go to jail,” Maron added, adding, “The escape-free cards that Alvin Bragg has been issuing over the past three and a half years are not subtle.”
“If you go to a store, throw away a lot of retail items, then throw them in your bag, then go past the security guard and then go out, you’ll be arrested. “Now someone might call the police. Maybe someone won’t. Maybe the police will arrest you. Maybe they won’t. They won’t. Everyone knows at the end of the line, so the prosecutors aren’t going to prosecute the case.”

Maron claimed that when Bragg took office in January 2022, he released the Day One Memo, saying that he “explained that there is an entire category of crime that he has no intention of prosecuting.”
“Alvin Bragg ran as a progressive prosecutor backed by George Soros. Implementing his progressive criminal justice policy means trying to put as few people in prison as possible. He tries to prosecute as few people as possible, and he tries to sue the lowest crimes he can,” she did. “You know there’s no consequence. You go to that store, take all your clothes off the shelf, and leave with them in the daytime daylight without hiding your face, and you don’t get into trouble. I can do that and get away.
“Actions either have consequences or not. And in Alvin Bragg’s New York, stealing has no consequences,” she argued.
In response, Bragg’s campaign spokesman Richard Fife fought over Maron’s report, saying, “There’s been far more in the last two years, but NYPD statistics report 11% of robberies, 11% of robberies, and 35% of homicides.”

“Maud Maron, a perennial candidate who recently lost his school board campaign, is once again distorted and misleading to hide his lack of eligibility,” Fife said.
He said, “When experienced Alvin Bragg took office as Manhattan Da in January 2022, New York, like almost every city, is still upset by the Covid national crime spikes.”
“Alvin has brought together business owners, law enforcement and community-based organisations to stop the rise in recurring shoplifting and targeted criminals, prosecuting organized crime rings that resell stolen goods, and improving coordination with local businesses and the NYPD,” he argued.
“If Alvin Bragg was half-savvy at prosecuting retail thefts, as was the cherry picking statistics, New Yorkers don’t need to ask for security to unlock a $6 deodorant to spend the day,” Maron said.

“Bragg can refer to all the handpicked NYPD numbers he wants, but New Yorkers are living in reality: more closed storefronts, more brave shoplifting, and just fear of workers trying to commute or run errands,” she added. “You don’t need a spreadsheet to find out the first day notes of Alvin Bragg’s Detective Codling.
