Audio from an emergency 911 call placed by the NFL Hall of Famers after his friend and business partner captured an exchange between a former Denver Bronco and a temporary worker after falling from his golf cart.
In a statement Monday, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office ruled Jeffrey Sperbeck’s death as a tragic accident, saying investigators found no criminals. Sperbeck was fatally injured after falling out of a golf cart driven by Elway in the Southern California golf resort community last April.
After providing the location during the edited 911 call obtained by the NBCLA, Elway identifies himself and explains to the dispatcher what happened.
Elway: “We were in a golf cart and he fell out of the golf cart.”
Dispatcher: “Did you encounter anything in that golf cart? Or did he fall from it?”
Elway: “No, he fell out of the golf cart. He was behind him and fell out of the golf cart.”
After dispatching emergency services, the dispatchers led Elway to stop the victim’s bleeding and first aid, but Medic quickly arrived at the scene.
The Sheriff’s Office says no criminal charges will be filed in the case.
Elway’s partner and former agent Sperbeck passed away in the fall on April 26th at the Madison Club in La Quinta, eastern Los Angeles.
He was 62 years old.
Sperbeck’s cause of death was dull force trauma, and the way he died was an accident that occurred when “a passenger fell out of the golf cart,” the county coroner’s report states.
Elway said in an April statement that he was devastated by the death of his best friend.
“There are no words that truly express the deep sadness I feel in the sudden loss of someone that means so much to me,” Elway said in a previous statement.
Sperbeck began managing Elway in 1990 when Elway was the quarterback for the Denver Broncos. He represented over 100 NFL players during his three-year career as an agent and business advisor.
Sperbeck helped manage Elway’s Business Empire, including restaurants, car dealers and Napa Valley Winery.
