Etsy may be known for its handmade jewelry, custom gifts and artisan decorations, but it also becomes a popular market for witches, psychics and spiritualists who offer spells, charms and metaphysical services online.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the so-called “Etsy Witches” sells everything from love spells and spirit cleansing to soulmate sketches and good fortune rituals. One popular influencer reportedly hired an Etsy witch to ensure the weather was nice on her wedding day.
Another Los Angeles creative director bought the spell to help the New York Knicks win the NBA Eastern Conference Finals in May. The Knicks won, but when they paid for another spell prior to Game 6 they lost.
KTLA’s David Lazarus reports that some have raised questions about whether digital magic should face greater restrictions on a spell that promises a paid specific outcome. Should there be licensing requirements to provide spells and psychic services online? Should the seller disclose that the service is likely or unlikely to work?
Supporters argue that the industry should still be careful of buyers, like horoscopes and traditional psychic readings.
A quick search of Etsy revealed hundreds of spell-based lists, ranging from soulmate drawings to tarot cards measured at $23.99. Some argue that prices seem steep, while others say it’s all fun.
Kacey Montoya of KTLA recalled reading of psychic pets that seemed to predict medical problems in dogs before surgery. “That’s a long story, but if it wasn’t mental, they wouldn’t have found what was in her eyes,” Montoya told the KTLA team. “And I wasn’t even a follower!”
Meanwhile, Lazarus remembers the time the psychic missed the mark completely and is unable to pick up the chronic illness during his personal reading. “I’m not mentioning the fact that I have a chronic illness,” he explained. “It didn’t even happen to her. You’d think it was like a psychic escape.”
Still, online demand for mystical services shows no signs of slowing down. Whether it’s astrology, psychic pets or NBA magic, spiritual services officially found your home on the digital marketplace. For many buyers, it is worth the shot.
