A new temporary postal service centre opened in Altadena on Wednesday, taking another step towards regaining important resources into the area.
Customers can unload mail and packages, as well as purchase Forever Stamps and Priority Boxes at the new village post office within Webster’s Pharmacy on Lake Avenue in Chase Plaza.
“We want to bring a bit of normalcy back to our community, and this is where it all started,” said Cipriano Corona, district manager at the U.S. Post Office.
After the local Altadena Post Office was destroyed in the Eton Fire in January, residents called on USPS to restore services to the area. Six months after recovery efforts, the site is the result of a collaboration between Altadena Recovery and the offices of Rebuild Corporation, USPS, and director Kathryn Barger.
Unlike regular post offices, USPS village post offices are run by third parties and aim to provide services in “more rural communities.”
The new Altadena facility is temporary, yet offers limited USPS services, Burger said, but her long-term goal is to bring the full-service post office back to Altadena.
“Every dark clouds have a silver lining. I have to say that this little but powerful post office opening is what we’re experiencing here today,” Burger said.
According to an Instagram post from the Altadena Town Council, after the aftermath of the fire and the damage to the post office, no official notices have been distributed to help residents cancel and update email services and email forwarding requests.
The council asked that USPS restore services at Webster’s pharmacy, which was previously home to the Contract Postal Service. The facility was closed after the drugstore moved to another location.
According to the Altadena Town Council, the pharmacy was denied “no explanation” when it attempted to revive the contracting force. The council began a conversation with USPS in February, Chairman Victoria Knapp said Wednesday, but failed to make significant progress until it reached out to Berger’s office.
She said about 30% to 40% of these important services have returned to Altadena.
“At this point in the recovery, there are important resources to bring normalcy back to Alta Denan,” Knap said.
Village post offices are open from 9am to 5:30pm and open from 9am to 3pm Monday to Friday and Saturday.
