Gov. Gavin Newsom assaulted the Trump administration on Wednesday for ruining Southern California’s economy through active immigration crackdowns after visiting communities and businesses that were hollowed out after weeks of attacks.
After talking to residents and business owners of the city of Downey and Bell, Los Angeles communities, newspapers lamented that moms and pop shops are struggling more than during the coronavirus pandemic.
“They said, ‘We miss Covid.’ They said it was much easier,” Newsom recalled a conversation with the business owner. “They said they lost 80% of their business. They say they lost their community.”
NBC Los Angeles has broadly covered the impact of immigrant raids, as workers are afraid of going to work or buying the necessary items for fear of immigrant raids being detained by federal agents, whether they are documented or undocumented. The busy shopping district in downtown Los Angeles, including Santee Alley, has seen more shops with doors closed with obvious fewer shoppers over the past few weeks.
While standing in front of Downey Church, where the apparent immigration operation was carried out last month, the governor issued a temporary restraining order last week to halt widespread immigration halts and arrests in California, including Los Angeles, but said he could feel the tension and tension from the community. Under the order, federal agents are prohibited from relying on race, occupation, or speaking Spanish or English.
“There was no one in the ice cream shop in the middle of a summer day,” Newsom said of his visit to Bell. “They said they weren’t coming, they’d destroy the economy, they’d destroy families, they’d destroy the business of a generation.”
Addressing the Trump administration’s decision to withdraw 2,000 National Guard members from Los Angeles on Tuesday, the Democratic governor characterized the Pentagon’s first order to send troops in response to reflective protests as “absurdity” and a waste of resources and time.
“The people who were taken to weapons waiting for mission assignments and taken are summer school teachers, paramedics, firefighters and police officers,” Newsom said. “Because of this absurdity in this complete incompetence of the Pentagon, to alleviate the fact that they weren’t doing damn things.”
The California governor added that he hopes to bring the National Guard back into his control so that it can be used for important tasks such as wildfire prevention.
Following the announcement of the Pentagon, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass described partial withdrawal as “a victory.”
“Los Angeles was standing strong,” Mayor Bass said. “We organized peaceful protests, came together at rally and took the Trump administration to court, all of which led to today’s hideout.”
Bass has also doubled her previous comment that there is no need for troops in the city.
“Their main mission here was to protect two buildings that frankly don’t need to be followed,” Bass said. “(They) unfolded unnecessarily, meaning they had to leave their families, they had to leave their education, they had to leave their jobs.”
The first development will be in 60 days, and the court is expected to hear more debate next month regarding the legality of federal deployments
