The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Office had executed a search warrant Friday at a Santa Monica residence related to an investigation into the East Los Angeles explosion that killed three deputies, police said.
Search warrants were provided in the Bay and Lincoln Avenue areas. Evacuations were made to the complex and surrounding areas, according to LASD Deputy Miguel Meza.
Two rena bullets were recovered Thursday after property tenants reported they had found them in storage units to Santa Monica police. According to Santa Monica police, the LASD bomb squad removed two hand rena bullets that were determined to be inert from the complex.
“The murder detective is in the process of obtaining a search warrant for the location by the LAPD bomb squad, ATF and FBI searching for potential explosives,” Nicole Nishida told LASD. “At this point it is not determined whether devices found yesterday are correlated with today’s important incident.”
Neighbors were asked to be evacuated by LASD as the investigation continued.
“The bomb squad came and almost recovered with fanfare. Let us know we need to evacuate. Everyone was asked to leave,” said Santa Monica’s neighbor, Michael Kelman.
Santa Monica PD is supporting the sheriff’s department in the incident and evacuating residents of the complex. They are in the process of finding shelter for the displaced people.
Three deputies were killed after an explosion was reported early Friday at the LA County Sheriff’s Department training facility.
The explosion occurred at the Viscale Center Training Academy, in the 1000 block of Northeast Avenue, around 7:30am.
The three deputies killed in the East LA explosion are part of the explosion force within the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Division, and the team, the elite team within the largest sheriff’s division, are responsible for dealing with explosive devices and investigating violations of state or federal law.
