After meeting with New York City’s leading candidate Zohran Mamdani, minority leader Hakeem Jeffries, DN.Y. issued a slimy statement through a spokesman about the meeting, not supporting the party’s candidates.
Mamdani, a New York State Senator and a self-proclaimed socialist who has promised to overhaul New York City and launch a massive new government program, is endorsed by progressive politicians like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y. and Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Despite winning a large Democratic nomination for former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, Mamdani is yet to be supported by the party’s top leaders, Sen. Jeffries and Sen. Chuck Schumer.
Jeffries and Mamdani met in New York City for about an hour on Friday.
After the meeting, Politico Reporter’s Nicholas Wu posted a statement from Jeffries spokesman Justin Chermol called it “constructive” but not including any mention of support.

“The meeting between leader Jeffries and Congressman Mamdani was constructive, open and community-centric, with a focus on affordability,” Chermol said.
“Leaders Jeffries and Congressman Mamdani discussed a variety of other important issues, including public safety, rising anti-Semitism, gentrification and the importance of retrieving homes in 2026.”
According to Chelmol’s statement, the two “agree to meet soon, along with other members of the New York City Council delegation and several high-level community leaders.”

Mamdani is considered a controversial candidate by many. This is seen in part due to his proposals for socialist policy and his intense criticism of the Israeli state. Mamdani, a Muslim, refused to say whether Israel has the right to exist as a Jewish state, and whether he had his first refusal to condemn the phrase “globalize the intifadas.” However, he recently began to distance himself from the phrase.
On Thursday, Jeffries told reporters, “I’ll have a sit-in conversation and then take it from there, as it applies to all the famous support decisions I’ve made in the past.”
The meeting with Jeffries comes after Mamdani attended a breakfast hosted by Ocasio-Cortez after a recent visit to Washington, D.C., and mixed with some of the party’s most powerful players. Since then, he has secured approval from Rep. Ro Khanna of D-Calif, who serves as a ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee.

Mamdani is running to fire Eric Adams, the current mayor of New York City, who is running for reelection as an independent. He also faces independent Kaomo and activist Curtis Swawa, a Republican candidate.
