Minnesota Sen. Nicole Mitchell was convicted of felony robbery on Friday after more than a year after being arrested while breaking into her stepmother’s home.
Mitchell has faced pressure to resign from both sides of the aisle since his arrest, but there was a defender who said he deserved his day in court. One of them was Erin Murphy, the Minnesota Senate majority leader. He, like Mitchell, is a member of the Democrats Party (DFL).
“Senator Mitchell is given the rightful procedure as her fellow ju umpire judges have passed the verdict. I was relieved to see the end of Senator Mitchell’s trial. The resolution in the case clarifys the situation,” Murphy said in a statement issued after the ruling.
“Senator Mitchell told his colleagues that he intends to resign if he commits this crime. I hope she will follow that commitment. Our Caucus is focused on issues that are important to Minnesotan families and communities.”

The state legislator was arrested in April 2024 on suspicion of breaking into his stepmother’s home. Mitchell said she went to her stepmother Carol Mitchell’s house and retrieved her late father’s items. The state senator claimed that her stepmother was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
Mitchell admitted that she trespassed in her stepmother’s house and lied to the police about why she was there, but that she admitted to her stepmother that she had been lifted out of concern.

Video of Mitchell inside the police cruiser handcuffs and questions was shown at her trial. In the video, she told the officer “I’m just trying to get some of my dad’s.” Mitchell told police that she would “never tell me anymore,” so she resorted to breaking into a Detroit Lake home.
Among the items Mitchell said he wanted to retrieve were his father’s ashes, photographs, clothing and other sentimental items.

When she was arrested, officers found her a flashlight covered in black socks. Additionally, the officers said they searched for a black backpack and found two laptops, a mobile phone, a driver’s license, Senate ID and a Tupperware product.
Although there is no date for the sentence, Mitchell cites his lawyer and faces a minimum of six months and up to 20 years in prison.
