Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo appeared to be joking on Saturday.
Cuomo lost to Mamdani in the Democratic primary, but plans to challenge him as an independent in the general election. The line, delivered with political insiders at Hamptons breakfast, sparked laughter, but also highlighted growing anxiety over the city’s political direction.

The statement came during a private gathering hosted by businessman John Catsimatidis at 75 Main in Southampton. Catsimatidis, a GOP donor and radio host, is also the owner of the Gristedes and D’Agostino supermarket chains, and could be directly affected by Mamdani’s proposal to create a government-run grocery store.
The guest list included RXR Realty Chairman Bruce Mosler, Ambassador George Tsunis and former Cuomo Aide Melissa Derosa’s top top. One participant described the line as an “amazing” moment. Several guests said they attracted attention in the room.

Rich Azzopardi, senior adviser to Cuomo, defended his comments to the New York Post.
“Governor Cuomo will never give up on New York,” he said. “This election led the city, highlighting the interests of this election and the risk of electing a dangerously inexperienced, hatred-spewing 33-year-old socialist.”
Cuomo repeatedly called the mum ticks “child” during the event. He called Mamdani’s rent freeze proposal a “death sentence” for landlords and housing supplies and dismissed his platform as an “unrealistic bumper sticker slogan.”
Mamdani’s campaign did not respond to requests for comment.

Cuomo also targeted Mayor Eric Adams, who is also a running independent, saying, “There has been no competent mayor since Bloomberg.” He accused Adams of failing to concentrate, citing ongoing investigation and ethics concerns.
Asked about the criticism by the New York Post, Adams replied, “If you’re serious about moving to Florida, he should move on. He’s already spent three weeks in Hampton.”

Cuomo’s campaign did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
