A fire broke out in one of the engines of Delta Air Lines’ planes shortly after taking off at Los Angeles International Airport late last week, but after a quick conversion, the jets safely landed.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, flight 446 on the way from LAX to Atlanta created a loop and landed around 2:10pm.
The Boeing 767-400 was on board with 226 passengers, along with two pilots and seven flight attendants. Shortly after takeoff, the crew received “signs of a left engine problem on the aircraft,” according to Delta.
By chance, the YouTube channel, which live streams the in and out of LA Flights camera operator LAX, happened to catch a Delta 446 when the engine started a fire. The footage shows the plane hanging out of the left engine, horning in the sky.
“Oh, wandering around, that’s not good,” the camera operator says the flames continue to burn. “Oh noooo.” A few minutes later, the video shows the plane safely arriving. The plane could return to the gate with its own power, and passengers were rebooked on other flights.
People who claim to be passengers or family members of the passengers later posted comments on the video.
“I was on this flight and sat in the central aisle,” one wrote. “We couldn’t see any smoke or fire, but some people saw it. Those 10 minutes were really scary. Everyone was very calm, even if we were in panic internally.
