The explosives that exploded and killed three LA County Sheriff’s Office deputies could have been found in a storage unit in an apartment in Santa Monica, law enforcement sources said.
The explosion occurred last Friday morning at the Viscale Regional Training Center in East Los Angeles.
The three representatives, Detective Joshua Kelly Ecklund, Detective Victor Remus and Detective William Osborne, were killed while operating “unpaid weapons,” sources told KTLA on Friday. All three were assigned to the LASD Special Enforcement Bureau’s Arson Explosive Details.

A new report appearing Monday morning shows that the explosives may have been connected to operations that took place in Santa Monica last Thursday. Deputies, including the three who died, were called to the Bay Street apartment building to assist Santa Monica Police Station officials in investigating an explosive device in a storage unit near the building.

Sources told KTLA that explosives found in the apartment storage unit on Thursday may have killed a deputy on Friday.
A woman calling the 911 said a woman was calling the 911 after finding the explosives in a storage unit that is likely to belong to the previous tenant.

“The man who lived here many years ago was former military,” the resident explained to KTLA 5’s Annie Rose Ramos. “He not only had some firearms, but he clearly had a hand-rena bullet.”
“We all have storage units. The woman who lived in the apartment where we currently live, found these hand rena bullets in her storage unit.

The explosive devices recovered on Thursday were then brought back by authorities to a facility in East LA, where deputies were believed to be running them when the blast exploded on Friday.

Bomb Squad engineers were seen searching the area at their apartments later Friday, searching for explosive material while evacuating residents. It was not immediately known if anything had been found.
KTLA is still waiting for an official confirmation from the Sheriff’s Department whether the explosives found in Santa Monica were those that exploded and killed deputies.
