Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass spoke Monday at Los Angeles Mission College in Sylmer, continuing in sought the removal of troops from the city.
Thousands of troops, including members of the California National Guard and the US Marines, have been sent to Los Angeles amid immigrant raids and protests.
Half of the 4,000 National Guard troops were sent home, but buses and other local leaders want all the troops from Los Angeles as they could be used better elsewhere.
“We need the National Guard to help prepare for the fire season, not because of inappropriate deployments protecting buildings that are not under attack,” she said.
The Los Angeles Times said that the troops were deployed to protect the Wilshire Federal Building and other sites in Westwood and other sites, but they never faced the challenge.
“There’s not much to do,” the Marine told The Times.
The base was joined by Sen. Caroline Menzibal, a Marine Corps veteran.
“We blackmailed Americans in American soils that are exercising their constitutional rights to protest and did not sign up to potentially launch military action,” she said.
Bus encouraged people to write to legislative representatives to assert that they do not need troops in LA.
