The owner of the Anaheim Jewelry Store is relieved, but he was unable to drive the guards off Monday after scaring more than dozens of robbers from inside his store last week with a single warning gunshot.
Security footage shows five cars being pulled in front of Al Amirah Jewelry on Brookhurst Street at 6:30pm Thursday. The group of about 15-20 wearing hoodies and face coverings closed in store as some people tried to break the front door with a sledgehammer.
“I’m looking at the window. I see five cars with people coming to my store,” said the jeweler, who didn’t share his name due to safety concerns. “At this moment I had to protect myself.”
Videos from inside the store show the owner fired one gunshot, scaring the group from the front door. He said he didn’t want to harm any of the robbers, so he intentionally shot them towards the ceiling where the bullets rested on the bulletproof glass.
The owner added that his shop is equipped with bulletproof doors and extensive security systems.
“I have to protect myself and my business, and all jewelry stores have to do the same,” he said.
According to Anaheim investigators, Al-Amira is the third Anaheim jewelry store to be targeted in about a month.
Sergeant. Matt Sutter of the Anaheim Police Department said he is investigating possible connections with Robery at other jewelry stores.
On Tuesday, police arrested five people about four miles away after a robbery at Don Robert Jewelers. Police say two people were arrested in June after driving to a Bethan jewelry store across the street from Al Amira.
“I’ve seen some of these vehicles in other robbers I saw on the news, so they may be related. Some vehicles are very specific,” Sutter said.
Police said they were able to identify one license plate from the five vehicles involved and are pursuing other leads.
