Some people want to run away, like to take vacations from the neighborhood.
But these lucky people didn’t film a flight to Miami Beach or the Greyhound on the Hudson Riverline, so they just happened to be sitting behind a Manhattan pedicab playing the song “Minds of New York State.”
And Billy Joel stood up with them.
“Piano Man” posted the only new York meet video on social media on Monday.
“We’re in a state of mind in New York…everyday,” he wrote in the caption.
Video shot from the back seat of the SUV shows Joel rolling the window to greet the pedicab driver and two passengers.
When the driver realized it was the singer of the song that rang through his speakers, he reached out and waved.
“Look at us playing you, man,” Driver said.
The New Yorker has seen all the movie stars in flashy cars and limousines, but Joel pulled up because even in the city that never sleeps, his song was so good that it wasn’t true.
“We love you,” one of the female passengers told Joel. “How are you feeling?”
Joel – a man recovering from a brain disorder known as normal pressure hydrocephalus – and his wife Alexis posed for a selfie with the driver.
“Thank you for stopping our day and making it,” Driver commented on Joel’s post. “Today is my client’s birthday. She said she had the best birthday ever.”
Thank you to the guy in the right lane.
The video was posted the same day Joel made his first public comment. He announced he had been diagnosed with a rare disorder.
Joel was relieved to fans in an interview about Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast released Monday that he didn’t have to worry about him.
“It feels good,” Joel told Maher. “My balance sucks. It’s like a boat.”
Joel looked fine while cruising through New York. And he may have to consider adding new modes of transportation to the lyrics of his song about the city.
“If you want to ride a pedicab,” the driver commented. “No matter when I say that, I’ll prepare a limousine.”
