“The rumors are true. I’m running again for the Los Angeles sheriff.”
Former Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva announced Tuesday evening that he plans to run for his old position in 2026.
Standing in front of a banner that read “Alex Villanueva, Help is ongoing,” the former sheriff announced the campaign in a video he posted to X.
“Over the past few years, Los Angeles County has seen the outcomes of leadership failures not only in the sheriff’s department but across the local government,” Villanueva said.
Villanueva will face Robert Luna, who defeated him in 2022, between 59.8% and 40.2%.
The Vianueva Security Committee was registered with the Secretary of State’s office over the weekend.
“The promises made in 2022 were the tragedy of more than a quarter of the workforce, the ongoing departure of experienced personnel, secondary suicides and deaths during compromise, replaced by severe outcomes,” Villanueva said. “On our streets, we’ve become a new normal where street buy-ups, looting, organized robbery crews are terrorizing our community. Our families feel unsafe.
In 2018, Villanueva defeated Jim McDonnell, the current chief of the Los Angeles Police Department.
Standing behind the podium, Villanueva said it was time to bring proven leadership back into the department.
“On our streets, we’re becoming a new normal where street acquisitions, looting, organized robbery crews are terrorizing our community. Families feel unsafe, deputies feel unsupported.
The former LA County Sheriff said his campaign is to build a safer and stronger future.
“I have walked this path before, but have returned with a broader experience, a more clearer and deeper commitment to better people,” Villanueva said.
In April, Oscar Martinez, Sheriff’s Palmdale Station, announced plans to challenge Luna in 2026.
