Two street vendors are recovering from injuries after being attacked by drivers accused of intentionally plowing crowds outside East Hollywood nightclubs over the weekend.
Nicolas Suarez and Maria Medrano suffered a broken bone in a crash Saturday morning. They were selling food outside Vermont Hollywood when drivers intentionally attacked a crowd of pedestrians outside the venue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Bender’s daughter, Sarah Suarez, said her father had broken her leg and her mother had broken several ribs. Furthermore, the vending carts they used to make a living were destroyed.
“It’s not just work for them,” Sarah said. “That’s the same with the community. Of course, they do it to offer us, but that’s how we maintain connection. Seeing everyone gather in such a scary moment shows just how strong our community is.”
Police arrested 29-year-old Fernando Ramirez in connection with the clash. On Tuesday, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced that the suspect is facing a 37-count attempted murder and a 37-count assault with a deadly weapon.
According to two LAPD sources, Ramirez said he was kicked out of Vermont Hollywood for fighting and being destructive and drunk. After a while, police said he had driven his car into the crowd.
If convicted, Ramirez could face multiple life sentences. He is scheduled to be arrested Wednesday.
