Children’s Hospital LA will terminate transgender program despite state law

Jesse Thorne was distraught when Children’s Hospital Los Angeles first told thousands of patients last month that it was closing its pediatric gender clinic, but he was sure he could soon find a new local care team for his child.

But by the time the Transyouth Health and Development centre officially closed on Tuesday, the three fathers had planned to flee the country.

“They’re targeting people who can,” Thorn said. “[I’m afraid] I took my child to see the doctor and the police showed up at my door. ”

Until this week, the children were one of the largest and oldest pediatric gender clinics in the United States. And he was one of the few who provided adolescent blockers, hormones and surgical procedures for trans adolescents under public insurance.

Experts say the closure of well-known programs provides a broader understanding of the availability of care across the country. This includes former safe havens in California, New York and Illinois. There, state laws protecting trans-specific healthcare are crumbling when the Trump administration twists legal pressure and bureaucratic arms.

Last week, the University of Chicago School of Medicine and the DC National Hospital of Children announced that they would be termination or dramatically reducing their services for transyouth following similar moves by Stanford Medicine, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Orange County Children’s Hospital.

“This care delivery is rapidly collapsed in the Blue State,” says Alejandra Carabaro, a civil rights lawyer and law instructor at Harvard University. “By the end of 2025, most care will be virtually banned.”

Some parents in LA say they are afraid that the Department of Justice will use private medical data summoned from California’s largest pediatric safety net hospital to separate children.

“That’s absolutely horrifying,” said Maxine, the mother of a pediatric hospital patient who refused to give her last name because she was afraid of an attack on her son.

“I am extremely afraid that the DOJ and this proxy Attorney General will chase after their parents and use the female genital mutilation law.

July 9th, Atty. General Pam Bondy announced that the Department of Justice has summoned patient medical records from more than 20 doctors and clinics.

“The medical professionals and organizations that hurt children in the service of distorted ideology are held accountable by this Department of Justice,” Bondy said in a news release announcing the move.

Children will not say whether it was summoned or whether it was carried over records according to government demands.

The Justice Department had already investigated pediatric experts for alleged crimes, ranging from deceptive trade practices to claim fraud. The federal health agency has vowed to withhold funds from agencies that continue to provide positive care.

“These threats are no longer theoretical,” a children’s hospital executive wrote to staff in an internal email announcing the closure on June 12th. ”[They are] It poses a threat to our ability to serve hundreds of thousands of patients who rely on CHLA for life-saving care. ”

Advocates say gender-affirming care can also save lives. They point to statistics being contested by the federal government and some experts – showing high suicide rates among trans youth.

In June, the decision to close the clinic was widely criticized. Advocates said LA ignored state law and “threw trans kids under the bus.”

Few people are saying that now.

“Unless these hospitals provide care to trans people, we could see children with leukemia amputating chemotherapy,” Carabaro said. “If one of the largest children’s hospitals in the country can’t cover that burden, we don’t see many others not being able to do so.”

Others agreed.

“No matter what California and other states do, they said, ‘We want to protect these kids.’ [programs close]said Dara E. Purvis, a law professor at Temple University.

So far, the Trump administration has portrayed parents as victims of “radical gender ideology.”

Some experts warned that as the government tightens doctors and hospital screws, trans teens and their families are likely to seek hormones outside the healthcare system, including grey market channels.

“We saw this in an abortion,” Carabalo said. “People are trying to get it any way.”

Like the charges against mothers who secured abortion pills for teenagers, there is fear that families could face prosecution as they continue to search for drugs.

“We will work with Congress on existing criminal laws related to female genital mutilation to protect children more robustly,” Attorney General Chad Mizzel said at a Federal Trade Commission workshop entitled “The Risks of Gender Violation Care for Minors.”

“We’re using all the tools from the Department of Justice to address this issue,” Misell said.

For now, dozens of hospitals across California still offer gender-affirming care, including hormone therapy and surgical procedures.

However, the list changes almost every day.

“Even programs that could have been run a month ago are not currently operating,” said Terra Russell Slavin, Chief Impact Officer of the Los Angeles LGBT Center. “There are many concerns that these agencies will be targeted, even being publicly exposed about providing care.”

With children under threat and little promise of national protection, some families are unsure what the coming months will bring.

Planning for a future trip is suddenly at risk for an Orange County father who asked not to be named for fear of retaliation against his trans son.

He said that only about half of his son’s identity documents match his gender and that they are warned not to try to change others.

“He cannot leave the country because he can’t get a matching passport,” his father said.

For Maxine, llamas are everyday tensions to balance existentially with the ordinary.

“My kids just live their lives. They want to go to concerts. They want to go back to school and go shopping. They don’t know this is happening,” the mother said. “We must experience this intense fear while maintaining a normal home for everyone else.”
