California is famous for its breakfast burritos, sourdough bread, fish tacos and aptly named California rolls, but is also known for its burger prowess. Of course, we’re talking about In-N-Out Burger, the state’s most popular burger chain. But Patty-loving Patrons scream the brand’s juicy double cheeseburgers and “animal style” fries, but according to USA Today readers, IN-N-Out isn’t even the best burger joint in the state.

There is a lesser known Cali-based burger chain that not only makes great burgers, but also makes obviously the best burgers in the country. (Yes, you read it correctly.) As part of the USA Today reader’s Choice 2025 Awards, Habit Burger & Grill’s double char was named the best burger in the entire United States, but In-N-Out created a fourth overall list.
Double char is as classic as burgers get. There are no random barbecue sauces, rings of onion, or excessively hot jalapeno slices. Stead consists of two Chargrilled beef patees. A blink of mayonnaise from caramelized onions, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and toasted bread. What is not included? cheese. It’s very flavorful and doesn’t need it. (However, you can add it if necessary.)
Other burgers that made the top 10 include the double meat Watt Burger, Burger King Hoopper, Freddie’s Original Double, Shake Shack’s Shack’s Shack Burger, Five Man Cheese Burger, Culver’s Double Butter Burger Cheese, In-In-Out Double Double, Jack in the Box Jumbo Jack Cheese Burger, A&W Daddy’s Badger.
While In-N-Out may not have a national appeal, Habit Burger & Grill is not a startup. In Genesis in 1969, the burger chain began in Santa Barbara, California and now includes more than 350 locations. Stop by one of these places and try some of the best burgers in the country.
