One of the two rena bullets found at the Santa Monica Townhome complex is currently missing, authorities said, ahead of the fatal explosion that killed three Los Angeles County Sheriff’s detectives.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Cigarettes, Firearms and Explosives determined that two rena bullets exploded on July 18th.
“We did a thorough search to find a second device, but we couldn’t find it yet,” he said during the briefing.
The ATF, investigating the explosion, envisions “full control to investigate the location of this other missing device.”
According to law enforcement, investigators learned that one of the rena bullets was missing when only one of the “spoons” was found.
The bomb squad recovered two hand rena bullets left in the underground parking garage storage unit at the 821 Bay St. complex on the evening of July 17th and took them to the Viscales Center Training Academy.
The next day, one of the hand-rena bullets exploded as a technician was handling them in the parking lot.
The explosion was the fatalest case for the department for the first time in more than 150 years, killing detectives from the department’s veteran. Joshua Kelly Ecklund, Victor Rems and William Osborne.
Authorities searched the boat docked at Marina del Rey on Monday and searched storage lockers on Tuesday and Wednesday.
