BOSTON (AP) — The two-way star of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Shoe Hei ohtani is scheduled to start on the mound Wednesday as he continues to accumulate from elbow surgery that prevented all pitching last season.
Manager Dave Roberts said Otani plans to work in Cincinnati in the Sunday before the Dodgers face the Boston Red Sox in the 3-Game Series finale.
The Dodgers will use a six-man rotation as the Japanese superstar returned with left-handed Blake Snell and pitched 4 2/3 innings in the fourth rehabilitation start of Triple A Oklahoma City on Saturday.
They currently have Clayton Kershaw, Tyler Glasnow, Dustin May, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Emmet Sheehan in the rotation.
“We’re going on Wednesday and we’ll probably be selling it the next Wednesday. It’ll probably lend itself to six people,” Roberts said.
In Otani’s final start, he allowed one run and four hits in three innings against Minnesota on July 22nd. He attacked three times, walked once, threw 46 pitches and threw 30 on strike.
Roberts feels this season has been like major league rehab and hasn’t foreseen the team will extend Otani’s workload deeply into the game for some time.
“I think this year on the pitching side is a kind of rehabilitation, maintenance,” he said. “We’re not going to put the reins from where we say, ‘I can go to the 110 pitch’. I don’t think it’s been happening for quite some time.
Also on Sunday, the club revitalized right-handed reliever Blake Trainen from the injured list, reminiscing left-handed Justin Wobleski.
Trainen, 37, made up a large part of his run to the World Series title last season, winning two series wins against the New York Yankees.
He has been on the sidelines since April 19th due to tension in his forearm.
“I think the only thing I’m trying to be careful about is the ups and downs,” Roberts said of his use of Trainen. “It’s fine for me to get into the leveraged innings.”
The 25-year-old Wrobleski is with the Dodgers for the fourth time this season. He’s a starter now, but Roberts said he’ll work from the bullpen.
“Three stints will “help the pen” for us, as we could use him in two stints just trying to get a high quality arm and get some length, so Roberts said. “The goal is to put the best pitchers on the roster in any role.”
To create a room on the roster, LA is an option with a right-handed right hand, with Klein and Edgard Henriquez.
