The two found out that after a small plane crashed off the Monterey County coast on Saturday night, the two didn’t respond and rescue crews were searching for a third party, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Monterey County officials warned that a twin-engine Beechcraft, on board three people, had crashed about 200 to 300 yards offshore at Coast Guard Monterey Station at 10:55pm on Saturday.
The plane took off from San Carlos Airport at 10:11pm and was last seen at 10:37pm near Monterey, according to flight tracking data from FlightAware.
The Coast Guard launched a 29-foot response boat that arrived at the scene just after 11pm.
Three crew members of the Coast Guard helicopter and California Forestry and Firefighter ship also assisted in the search, along with two Cal fire drones. Several local law enforcement agencies also assisted in the response.
The Beechcraft was in place, according to the Coast Guard.
The plane departed Sunday morning to Gooding Municipal Airport, Idaho (a 2-hour, 48-minute flight) and was scheduled to return to Monterey later that day.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash.
San Francisco ABC7 News reported that airplane parts containing at least one wheel had been washed away at nearby Asilomar State Beach by Sunday morning.
