Colorado coach Dion Sanders says he had bladder cancer – NBC Los Angeles

Colorado coach Dion Sanders revealed Monday that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of bladder cancer, but after surgery his oncologist thought he had been cured.

Dr. Janet Kukreja, president of urological oncology at CU Cancer Center/Uchealth University of Colorado Hospital, said Sanders had removed the bladder as part of the surgical plan.

“It was a very high quality tumor and it entered the bladder wall,” Kukureha said.

Sanders said he has been undergoing an annual diagnosis related to a previous thrombotic problem that led to the two toes being cut off. His CT scan was clear, but his doctor said he was referred to a urologist two weeks later for a simple procedure. Within minutes of the procedure, Sanders was told he had a tumor in his bladder.

Sanders, who turns 58 next month, spoke to the media the night before Fall Camp. He brought his medical team to discuss his diagnosis.

“They were so wonderful. You were so blessed,” Sanders said. “I will express every detail in words so that I can make educated decisions.”

Sanders was open about his recovery, so he lost 20 pounds, was bedridden for several days, and was in two catheter bags.

“I’m grateful. It was an incredible journey. It was a tough one,” he said. “I’m dealing with the catheter and dealing with everything I had to deal with. Now I’m still dealing with going to the bathroom. That’s a lifelong change. I’m going to be transparent.

Sanders is set to oversee Buffalo as he enters his third season with Colorado. Sanders said the only visible change could be on the sidelines.

“It’s real, so if you see Porta Potti as a side job, it’s real,” Sanders said.

The doctor said this form of cancer is common but not well spoken.

“This is the sixth most common cancer affecting Americans. It is actually the top 10 men and the fourth most common among men,” said Dr. Solomon Waldo, associate professor of urology at UT Southwestern. “It doesn’t make top 10 women, but it’s still common.”

Woldu warned that bladder cancer symptoms could be painless.

“Whenever a patient sees blood in the urine, or whenever there is a significant change in the symptoms of urinary disease, it should be evaluated by a primary care physician,” Waldo said.

Woldu and Sanders encourage men and women to keep up with their annual health checks.

“If I hadn’t been tested on anything else, they wouldn’t have been stumbling over this,” Sanders said.

Colorado coach Dion Sanders revealed Monday that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of bladder cancer, but after surgery his oncologist thought he had been cured.

The charismatic coach returned to campus last week and announced on social media that he had “Great Back and Feeling!” He missed out on football camp in Boulder this summer amid reports that he was ill.

“It was amazing to see the team yesterday,” Sanders said. “My God, that was so wonderful.”

Sanders said he shared news of his diagnosis with the team through a video that will eventually be released on YouTube.

The production crew for “Well Off Media,” which recorded Sanders and Buffalo, posted a video on YouTube on Sunday for their first meeting with the coach’s team.

In the middle of the clip was a scene dated May 9th. Sanders said: “I don’t know if I’m mentally or emotionally prepared. Last night was tough. Yesterday was tough because I had to make a will.

Sanders is addressing issues surrounding his left foot after he had two toes amputated in 2021 due to a blood clot issue while coaching at Jackson State. He missed Media Day in 2023, his first year in Colorado. I removed the blood clot from my right leg and did the procedure to straighten my toes with my left leg.

In March, Sanders signed an extension until the 2029 season.

Buffalo will begin its season on August 29th against Georgia Tech at Folsom Field. It will be his first season when he hasn’t coached one of his sons for quite some time. The Cleveland Browns drafted quarterback Shedure Sanders, but Shiro, who is safe, is in camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Deion Sanders and The Buffaloes appeared in the Alamo Bowl 4-8 in their first season and 9-4 last season. They wear big shoes to replace Chedur Sanders and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter.

In his nine years of MLB career and 14 seasons in the NFL, there are five things to know about Colorado soccer coach Deion Sanders.
