NBC Universal, Inc.

A gunman fired on Monday outside the largest casino in Reno, Nevada, killing three people and injuring three others before being detained, officials said.

Two casualties were in crisis and the other had been released from hospital, Sparks Police Chief Chris Crawforth said at a press conference Monday.

The suspect had no knowledge of his connection with the victim, police added that his motives were unknown.

The shooter walked to the casino hotel’s Bullet parking lot, pulled out a handgun and pointed it at a group of people, police said. His gun initially malfunctioned, but he was able to get him to shoot it immediately.

The suspect escaped from the parking lot on foot, where he was encountered by an armed casino guard. Crawforth said the gunman fired at the guard and fired as the shooter escaped.

The suspect also shot someone driving in the parking lot and attacked and killed the driver.

Police arrived less than three minutes after the first shot rang and the suspect fired them, police said in a statement.

“Trades like this are scary for the community to endure,” said Kathryn Nance, chief of Reno Police Station.

The resort is one of Reno’s most prominent venues, hosting concerts, sporting events and campaign rallies by President Donald Trump prior to the 2024 election. Located near the California border and just northeast of Lake Tahoe, the town is a popular summer tourist destination.

Hotel guests heard some shots from the resort’s valet area around 7:30am

60-year-old Michael Cisco said he was in his room and heard the pops, and he was going to head to the Barrett for his car. He looked out the window and saw people screaming and running out of the Bullet area.

He said he had held his stomach and saw the incredible man before he fell motionless next to the car. Cisco left the window as the gunshot continued.

“Half an hour after the incident, I realized I could be there and I started shaking,” he said. “That’s exactly where I go.”

Christina Martinez heard the shots just like she did when she stepped into the elevator in the lobby, but when she left the 18th floor they were still out.

Someone in the next room said there was a gunman just outside the main entrance.

“I feel very blessed, but that’s kind of why I had a panic attack,” she said. “What a god, I was just there.”

A few hours after the shoot, the entrance to the casino leading to the Bullet area was caught by the guests, and a privacy screen was placed in front of a glass door, blocking the view outside.

Three more people were treated for minor injuries at the resort, according to Devon Reese, chairman of the Northern Nevada Health Committee. One was grazing with a bullet on his pinky finger, and one was treated for severe anxiety and injured while running, he said.

More than a year ago, two men were charged with fatally shooting another man who was staying at the resort in January 2024.

The Grand Sierra claims to have the largest casino floor in northern Nevada, and is only a few blocks from Renotahoe International Airport. It is also one of the tallest buildings in the city, with nearly 2,000 hotel rooms.

“My heart breaks for the victims, their families, and our entire community. Reno is strong, but we are not immune to the gun violence epidemic that grabs this country,” Reese said in a social media post.
