Democratic New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is raising his eyebrows once again. This time, it’s on a resurface clip, he says, “Israel is not a place, not a country.”
As a Democratic candidate, Mamdani, considered the frontline for urban mayors with the highest Jewish population in the United States, has been criticized for his stance on Israel and refused to condemn the phrase “globalisation of intifadas.”
He is currently being criticized during a January 2024 panel discussion on Palestinian solidarity for a statement that raised doubts about American politicians’ support for Israel.
Mamdani made a statement at a December 2023 panel for “Here and Anywhere,” which documented Riverside Church in New York City.

During the panel, Mamdani called the American pro-Israel movement “a political device that is still well funded and very strong, but increasingly separate from public sentiment.”
He criticized American politicians for supporting Israel’s war against Gaza, saying, “It speaks to the fact that for many people, Israel is not a place, and it is not a country. It is an idea.

“You see the answers of so many politicians to questions about Israel…their answers were written 20 or 30 years ago. They spoke to a reality that doesn’t exist.”
Mamdani also criticized the idea that Israel and Palestine could exist as separate political entities.
“They are [American politicians] Regardless of the fact that a second state for Palestinians is physically impossible, staying true to the idea of a solution in the two states is because it is not even adjacent land at this moment when Palestinians live. So it tells us that everything is this disconnect,” he said.

He also said there was “the fear of rising discourse among the political classes of this country trying to question this practice.”
Back in his college days, Mamdani expressed his support for boycotts, sales and sanctions (BDS) against Israel.
In another recent video of Mamdani in 2021, the mayoral candidate highlighted his commitment to BDS.

“I don’t think there’s anything too mundane to stand up to the profession and the apartheid atrocities,” he said. “And if it’s a shipping container, a funded university, a university that helped develop the IDF’s weapons technology, or an event with an Israeli ambassador, whatever that may be, I think we need to show you what that solidarity looks like.”
