The research and its benefits are at risk after the UCLA Prime Minister said a freezing of federal funds at schools could have a major impact.
The Trump administration has accused the US$200 million in funding for federal UCLA medical and scientific research, and of not blocking anti-Semitism on its campus.
“This is not just a loss for researchers who rely on serious grants,” UCLA Prime Minister Julio Frenck said in a broad message from the campus. “It’s a loss for Americans across the country with jobs, health and futures that rely on the groundbreaking work we do.”
Earlier this week, President Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondy said the school would pay a “heavy price” for treating Jews and Israeli students.
Many UCLA students have been suing anti-Semitism cases on campus on October 7, 2023, since Hamas attacked Israel. Complaints have risen during the Israeli war in protests on Gaza and campus that have escalated since May last year.
“We have rejected this ironic weaponization of anti-Semitism, and the false information campaign calls for Palestinian freedom as anti-Semitism,” the Palestinian Justice teacher at UCLA said in a statement. “We have to name this for what it is: a thinly covered attempt to punish Palestinian freedom supporters and advance the long-standing conservative goal of dismantling higher education.”
