New York City’s socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani reportedly considers former Democrat Jamal Bowman the option to lead an urban school, despite Bowman’s controversial track record.
Bowman could become mayor in November and become New York City’s school prime minister, with the position of overseeing more than 1,000 schools with nearly 1 million students, the New York Post reported.
A progressive Democrat and a former member of Congress’ “The Squad,” Bowman, once called the standardized test in public schools, served as principal of a Bronx public school in 2015.
“Slavery, Jim Crow, Redlining, Crack Cocaine and now standardized tests are all… designed to destroy the minds, bodies and souls of black and brown people,” Bowman said.

According to a New York post on Friday, Bowman ran a radical public school without a license for about two years.
Bowman gained public notoriety in 2023 for attracting fire alarms in Congress in the middle of the dramatic house floor vote he was condemned, but has attracted intense criticism in recent years for his controversial anti-Israel comments.

Bowman defended the pro-Palestinian chant “From the River to the Sea,” which many in the Jewish community view as a call to eradicate Israel.
He is a solid critic of Israel, especially since the ongoing war with Hamas began in Gaza. Last year he attended a fundraiser co-sponsored by Islamic leaders. Islamic leaders said they were “happily seen” Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israeli civilians.
Bowman was also forced to apologise for Hamas for raping a woman during the October 7 massacre in Israel and denying that he committed other atrocities.

New York mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani will speak to the media at 32BJ SEIU headquarters following the massive shooting in Manhattan that claimed the lives of New York Police Station (NYPD) police officers and others in Manhattan, New York on July 30, 2025.
Bowman sparked rage from Jewish groups in 2024 for defending a mural of Louis Farrakhan, who had infamously sloppy parlors about Jews, including calling them “Satan’s Synagogue” and “termites.”
He fired that same year when the unearthed video showed it honoring the radical black activist and convicted murderer on a special project at New York City Middle School, while serving as principal before being elected to Congress.
A 2014 video centered around Cornerstone Academy at Social Action Middle School (CASA) shows Bowman praises a variety of historic black and Latino figures respected by the wall, including Assata Shakur, who was convicted of the 1973 murder of the New Jersey State Army. Bowman called the people on the wall “a tremendous, incredible person.”
Shakur, whose real name is Joanne Chesimado, is a member of the Black Liberation Army of the Black Nationalist Group, who was sentenced to life in prison for a fatal shooting of an officer before fleeing prison in 1979. She fled to Cuba. So she is still looking for domestic terrorists today.

Mamdani faces criticism of many of his own anti-Israel positions dating back to his own university days when he sought academic sanctions against Israel. He often spoke in favor of BDS. Sanctions against Israel affecting the clock are described as “an international campaign to represent Israeli states as expressions of national self-determination by boycotting consumers, withdrawing business and investments, and separating the nation economically through legal aquaculture.”
Mamdani has also faced criticism for refusing to condemn the phrase “globalisation of intifadas,” and Fox News Digital reported this week that Mamdani said in 2023 that Israel “is not a place” and “is not a country.”
Mamdani’s campaign did not respond to requests for comment from Fox News Digital.
“I’m not thinking about that,” Bowman said in early July about the possibility of an appointment to the New York Post. “I want to help my brother get elected. I’m extraordinary in compartmentalization. I want to help Zohran win the general election now.”
