Dozens of Texas Democrats are fleeing the nation to stop votes in districts that could benefit Republicans, marking dramatic efforts to derail future legislative processes.
According to local Austin Station KVUE, lawmakers are scheduled to fly to Chicago and hold a press conference with Illinois Gov. JB Pretzker on Sunday.
At least 100 members of the 150 Texas House must be present to do business. House Democrat Caucus spokesman Josh Rush Nisenson told The Associated Press that at least 51 Democrats are leaving the state.
Republicans currently hold 25 of the state’s 38 seats. They are supported by efforts to decline by President Donald Trump.

The district proposal introduced last week by Texas House Republicans could cover five new Republican U.S. House seats in the 2026 midterm elections.
House Democrat Caucus Speaker Jean Wu defended Democrats’ final efforts in a statement Sunday.
“This is not a decision we underestimate, but it is something we do with absolute moral clarity,” Wu said.

Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows issued a warning to Democrats on Sunday.
“The Texas home will be called tomorrow at 3pm,” he wrote to X. “If quorum doesn’t exist, all options are on the table to borrow recent talk points from my Democrat colleagues.”
