Media reports say Transport Secretary Sean Duffy will announce plans to build a nuclear reactor this week.
While NASA discussed the construction of reactors on the moon, Duffy’s directive provides a more critical timeline and facilitates the process. Duffy also serves as interim administrator for the space agency.
“Fission surface power (FSP) is an integral and sustainable segment of the Moon and Mars power architecture for future human space exploration missions,” the directive states. “It is essential that agencies move quickly to properly advance this critical technology, support future lunar economy, Mars’ high power energy generation, and strengthen national security in space.”

China and Russia have announced several joint efforts to deploy nuclear reactors on the moon by the mid-2030s, NASA said. If successful, it could potentially lead to the declaration of a “keepout zone” and hinder the US from establishing its existence there.
“There’s a very specific area of the moon where it’s important for the first person to get there to plant the flag,” Duffy recently said on “Hornity.” “Speed is essential because Chinese people want to get there too.”
The move means that NASA will continue to be put into nuclear development despite the recent cancellation of its joint program on nuclear-powered rocket engines.
The agency will need to be released by the time China intends to place people on the moon within 60 days of the directive, seeking proposals for a 100-kilowatt nuclear reactor to be fired by 2030.
Duffy spoke with Fox News about how NASA’s Artemis program aims to bring Americans back to the moon.
“We’re going to set up a base camp,” Duffy said. “And what we learned from the moon is to take us to Mars.”
Duffy has also issued another directive to quickly replace NASA’s priority, the International Space Station. The agency plans to award at least two companies, and preferably three out of four.

In April, China launched three astronauts into space and launched a six-month mission on the Tiangon Space Station, which will be translated into a heavenly palace.
China built its own space station after being excluded from the International Space Station. amidst US concerns about China’s space program and its relationship with the People’s Liberation Army, the military division of the ruling Communist Party.
NASA is increasingly considered in the Trump administration’s defense, innovation and economic agenda.
Trump announced to Duffy that he would serve as NASA interim administrator in July, claiming that he had withdrawn Jared Isaacman’s nomination in May.

Isaac Man, a billionaire private astronaut and longtime Elon Musk aide, was appointed Trump in December 2024, but faced surveillance over Musk’s ties with Spaces, which some officials viewed as a conflict of interest.
The International Space Station was launched into orbit in 1998. At the time, the US agreed to the peaceful use of the Orbital Institute with several other countries, including Russia, Japan, Canada and 11 countries.
China has been removed from the plan.
