Part of Fort Stewart in southeastern Georgia was locked up Wednesday after active shooters were reported in a vast Army post, a spokesperson said.
Five soldiers were shot dead, the base said in a social media post. All soldiers were “treated on the ground and moved to Winn Army Community Hospital for further treatment,” according to a basic statement, “there is no positive threat to the community.”
The shooter was taken into custody at 11:35am ET.
Located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah, Fort Stewart is the largest army east of the Mississippi River. It is home to thousands of soldiers assigned to the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division and families.
Fort Stewart said in a previous Facebook post that “a victim has been reported.” It is unclear whether casualties include injuries, death, or both.
“All gates at Fort Stewart are currently closed due to lockdown status,” Fort said on social media.
The shooter was in the area of the second armored brigade combat team, the fort said online.
Three primary schools at the fort are also being blocked, community principal Brian Perry told WTOC-TV. The school has nearly 1,400 students, according to the Department of Defense.
Three schools just outside the base are taking similar steps to lockdowns “from a wealth of caution,” the Liberty County school system said online.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is in contact with law enforcement that responds, he said in a statement. Buddy Carter, a district that includes Fort Stewart, said in an online post he was monitoring the development.
