Boiling Water Notices issued to Granada Hills and Porter Ranch – NBC Los Angeles

Water service disruptions continued Thursday, when thousands of residents of Porter Ranch and Granada Hills are expected to soar to three times the numbers as in the ’90s.

In two northwest San Fernando Valley communities of over 9,200 LA province water and electricity customers, residents were told to use bottled water or boiling water for cooking and drinking. The stop started Tuesday after an underground valve where the water flow could not be opened.

Repairs began quickly, but were not expected to be completed until Friday. In the meantime, temperatures are expected to peak this Thursday.

Here’s what you need to know.

Where is the LADWP water outage?

The affected area is surrounded by Rinaldiavenue to the south, Balboa Boulevard to the east, Desoto Avenue to the west, and hills to the north and hills to the north. The region will affect approximately 9,200 DWP customers.

Why is there a stop?

Water crews were doing repair work Tuesday at a pump station that connects to a 10 million gallon water tank that serves the area when valves controlling water flow could not be opened, according to LADWP. The pipes that normally flow into the tank and serve the community were cut off.

Residents were left without reliable water services.

When will water services recover?

The suspension could last until at least Friday. The work involves excavation to reach a valve about 20 feet underground. The excavation was expected to take approximately 14-16 hours for repairs to begin.

The LADWP crews work overnight to solve the problem of running out of water in thousands of family homes. Tracey Leong is reporting an NBC4 News report on August 6, 2025 at 11pm.

About boiling water notifications

The LADWP and the state Water Resources Management Board’s Drinking Water Department have advised some residents of the area to use boiled tap or bottled water for drinking and cooking. This notice affects either DWP customers north of Rinaldi Street or 118 expressways, or even north, west of Balboa Boulevard.

Failure to follow the recommendations could lead to stomach and intestinal diseases, the agency said at its release.

“The abundant care requires consumers to follow these important health and safety instructions, and LADWP staff will conduct tests to confirm water quality,” LADWP said. “All tap water is boiled, boiled for one minute and allowed to cool before use. This applies to water, which is also used to prepare foods, such as brushing teeth, making ice cubes, and washing.”

Water may also be treated with household fragrance-free liquid bleach. LADWP provided the following instructions/

For clear water, use 8 drops (1/8 tsp) of bleach in 1 gallon of water. For cloudy water, filter through a clean cloth and use 16 drops (1/4 teaspoon) of bleach in 1 gallon of water. Mix well. Stand for 30 minutes before use. Water may taste or smell like chlorine. This means disinfection has occurred.

The DWP has established a water distribution site that provides drinking water to affected residents.
