Students from the Los Angeles Unified School District will pack their backpacks and return to school next week.

Last year, around 400,000 students participated in one of the county’s more than 1,500 schools.

From school supplies to new resources, here are some things students and parents need to know before classes begin next week:

When is the first day of school?

The first day of school for LAUSD students is Thursday, August 14th.

Other notable dates can be found on the district’s guidance calendar.

How can families prepare for the first day?

Parents should keep an eye on the registration form and ensure emergency card information is updated so that school staff can contact trustworthy adults.

Los Angeles County nonprofits, city government and churches are holding upcoming school drives if they are trying to secure school supplies and other essentials ahead of next year. Click here to find a summary of these free events.

What’s new this year?

LAUSD has expanded its electric school bus fleet to 180 vehicles ahead of the new semester, Principal Alberto Carvalho shares on social media.

The bus is also equipped with WiFi and GPS technology, allowing parents to track the bus in real time, according to the post.

Umma Health, a community-based care provider, has also expanded its partnership with the district to launch a third Camposh-based site at Locke Wellness Center in South Los Angeles.

The center, according to its website, will provide extended services, including medical and preventive dental care.

How does LAUSD handle immigration enforcement projects?

For many in Los Angeles, the widespread immigration enforcement business has added a new level of stress from school to school.

Los Angeles School Board President Scott Shelson said the district will continue to take steps to help families feel safe sending their children to school.

“We know that much of our hearts is heavy, but when we come back, we know that when we return, we will return with a stronger commitment to ensuring that our students can learn in the safe environment that is our school.”

The school will continue to distribute securing your safety zone, providing virtual options and grasping your rights cards in an effort to make your family feel safe, he said.

The district is also working to ensure students and families communicate safely with school staff. Schmerlson shared a plan to link students with confidential behavioral support, regardless of the immigration situation.

Principal Alberto Carvalho told NBC Los Angeles that the district prevented individuals from enrolling in schools last year and “do it again.”

Lausd is also reading the bus route, Carvalho said he is supporting the bus route to help families who are afraid to be on the streets when they enter and leave school. They made more than 4,500 calls to provide a sense of security for families with vulnerable immigrant status, he said.

Carvalho added that the mayoral group, including Mayor Karen Bass, will ask deputies to avoid running operations within certain radii around the school.

Do you have more questions from the school?

Lausd will be holding a live social media Q&A on Carvalho from 10am to 11am on August 13th. The session will air on a Unified Social Account in Los Angeles.
