Sandwiches are natural summer food. It’s cold, picnic, beach ready, and you don’t have to eat all the silverware. Throwing something together at home is easy, but deli sandwiches can enhance practice and provide delicious support to local businesses. And according to the new Yelp rankings, Los Angeles is home to some of the best Sammies in the country.

In fact, across California, there are 14 stunning sandwiches, more than any other entry on Yelp’s list of top 100 sandwich shops in the US. (Texas, second-placed, approached with 11.) One from LA took the coveted spot in the top 10 sandwiches.
The number 5 comes in at the Shortpper Woods Deli at Huntington Park. Owner Robert Valdes opened it three years ago, but at the time it was the only deli within four miles that served food “clean and full of flavor,” he told Yelp. In this food desert, Valdez offers specialty sandwiches such as cheeky turkey pretzels (turkey, avocado, locally made tender pretzel bread in homemade chipotle sauce) and Italian stallions (four different meats, spicy pickled onions and red pepper sauce).
On the Deli website, Valdes said he was inspired by Dougwood Bumstead, a character who loves the cartoon Blondie sandwich. The word “forest” in the name of Deli pays homage to him.
Given some of the restaurant’s mission, Valdez organizes food and clothing giveaways and works with the Youth Program for teenagers. For the National Night Out in August, he will offer a complimentary sandwich. Additionally, scholarships for high school athletes are under work. What else on the horizon? merchandise!
Elsewhere on the list, the top spot belongs to Frankie’s Deli warehouse in Hialea, Florida, with bespoke deli sandwiches and warm greetings on entry. Continuing California’s Bonafides is a Sierra submarine and salad, compliant with three California rivers. In this bright yellow structure at the edge of the Kawia River, patrons can enjoy a huge selection of mafarettas, manwitches, “wasabi’s stinger” (wasabi’s slow mayonnaiseyo and grilled chicken), and quesadillas.
And another Kari-based spot is a downtown ban spot offering super subs, meatball subs, Chicago hot dogs and spicy Asian chicken sandwiches.
