End the summer by catching a stunning drone show in downtown LA

If you weren’t aware of the mood to celebrate Independence Day last month, you weren’t alone. Between wildfire concerns and federal immigration attacks, many of the city’s holiday festivals have somehow been cancelled, postponed or changed. This included the Music Center and the annual block party at Gloria Morina Grand Park. This is the biggest free celebration of July 4th on the West Coast, but was eventually rescheduled due to safety concerns amidst anxiety.

However, a new date for the event has finally been announced. It was reconsidered as a love letter to Los Angeles called “Block Party at Gloria Morina Grand Park: Celebrating LA Culture and Community.” Just two months after the original date, Park for Everyone will host a drone show, DJ sets, food trucks and art installations on September 6th, taking over the park from 3pm to 9pm from Grand Avenue to Broadway and surrounding streets.

This year, the July 4th fireworks show pivoting on drones for environmentally friendly safety reasons, but Grand Park was already ahead of the curve. For the past two years, I have opted for drones over Pyrotechnics. And once again, Grizzly Entertainment’s 3D drone show lights up the night at 8pm. According to the Music Center, the 12-minute display “emphasis on the resilience of the LA community and praise Angelenos’ ability to enjoy.”

The party’s theme of its own country’s resilience is also reflected in its art installations and activities. The area, known as “Little La,” recreates an interactive journey through the county’s immigrant enclaves, featuring dance, storytelling, scavenger hunts and chalk-drawn maps of the LA highways. Meanwhile, Art Walk will showcase interactive art and intimate portraits of life in LA

There are also resources on-site to encourage citizens’ actions and provide legal support. There are booths that offer voter registration and legal advocacy and wellness resources such as Humanitarian Immigration Rights, Westside Food Bank and the Las Photos Project.

“The block party at Gloria Morina Grand Park is more than a gathering. It’s a powerful declaration of who we are as Angelenos,” said Rachel S. Moore, president and CEO of the Music Center. “As the world has witnessed in the past few months, Angelenos has an overwhelming spirit unlike any other. We endure. This block party is about celebrating our roots, resilience and the right to regain our joy.

However, there are plenty of easy fun too. KCRW Summer Nights curates a lineup of LA-based DJs at Black House Radio, Discos Rolas and station Boogie Boudreaux and Francesca Harding, located behind the deck. And the food truck offers a wide variety of culinary delights, ranging from Venezuelan to Chinese and Mexican cuisine. (Please note that alcohol is not permitted and is not offered at the park.)

Parking is available for $10 at both the music center and the Walt Disney Concert Hall parking, but public transport is encouraged because the park offers a very well-metro.
