Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson warns that finances in the country’s third most populous city “has reached a point where there has been no revival.”

The mayor said this week that the city needs to take steps to address the looming budget shortage, and that the critical systems Chicago offers, including education, housing, healthcare and transportation, are “severely underfunded.”

In the country’s most populous city, 800 miles east, there are concerns that if democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani wins the election as New York City’s next mayor, the city could head to the deeper financial by half a century ago.

The Chicago Tribune warns that “Halloween will be coming soon” due to a lack of cities

Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic mayoral candidate in New York City, will speak to reporters on August 7, 2025.

Incumbent mayor Eric Adams, who has dropped out of the 2025 race for the Democratic mayoral nomination in New York City and is running for reelection as an independent, has made a deal with the city council on a budget of around $116 billion in 2026.

“We don’t have a perfect budget, but we’ve come a long way, and this is pretty close,” City Council Chairman Adrienne Adams said at a news conference in late June when he announced the contract.

But Mamdani, 33, over Adams, the former New York governor and two other candidates in the November general election, is running on expensive platforms to tackle affordable and inequality in one of the country’s most expensive cities.

Mamdani attracted public attention in late June after topping Cuomo and nine other candidates in the Democratic primary.

Mamdani, a Ugandan-born state legislator from Queens, New York City, proposes eliminating the fare to board New York City’s vast bus system and providing “free childcare” that offers Cuny (no city college tuition fees,” “earn tuition fees, freeze municipal housing,” and “free childcare.”

There are concerns that the significant spending paid for Mamdani’s proposal will increase, and that a potential lack of revenue could put a strain on New York City’s budget.

And at the heart of Mamdani’s proposal to pay for his expensive scheme is the “billionaire tax,” which critics say will spur ultra-rich New York City residents to escape.

Mamdani’s agenda gave Republicans a lot of feed to use to carry out attacks. President Donald Trump went further and accused Mamdani of being a “communist.”

And Mamdani’s rivals in the mayoral election in November are also targeting him.

Adams says Mamdani is making “false promises” that hurts low-income New Yorkers. The mayor also argues that Mamdani’s proposal to set up a government-run supermarket will “destroy local bodegas and local shops.”

Cuomo said Thursday that Mandani “suggests a theory of socialism that never worked anywhere,” as he proposed his own plan to deal with affordability in New York City.

“What is the best answer to affordability? It is business development. It is opportunity. It is work. It is economic growth. It is not anti-business socialism,” Cuomo said he answered by asking his own questions.

Fighting back, Mamdani Campaign spokesman Dora Pekec argued that “trust in Andrew Cuomo to deal with New York’s affordable crisis is equivalent to challenging arsonists by putting out the fires – he created this crisis.”

“Reliance on Andrew Cuomo to deal with New York’s affordable crisis is equivalent to putting out a fire on an arsonist. He created this crisis,” Mamdani spokesman Dora Peckek said in a statement.
