State and federal Democrats on Friday expressed support for redrawing district boundaries across California, as proposed by Gov. Gavin Newsom in response to Republican-led state rezoning efforts.
Governor Gavin Newsom was joined by Speaker Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and other elected officials.
Newsom last week said it was working with state lawmakers to temporarily overturn the independent district change committee, withdrawing the district line to Democrats, and pushing at least five of the nine Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives.
His announcement comes after the announcement of a new Congress map proposal to help Texas Republicans win five additional seats in next year’s midterm elections.
Newsom has accused Trump and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott of trying to “equip the election” by shifting district boundaries in ways that target U.S. House Democrats.
“They caused this response, and we’re not going to roll over,” the governor said this week as he was asking a reporter questions about the rezoning plan. “(President Trump) knows he’s going to lose in the medium term and there’s an opportunity to effectively end President Trump within 18 months, which is what he’s at risk.
